Airtel Launches 16MBPS DSL BroadBand - What About Tata Tele’s 100 MBPS Connection Then?

Bharti Airtel has introduced a 16 Mbps broadband connection which it claims is the fastest wireline broadband on DSL in the country. This service, powered by Airtel's Carrier Ethernet Network, will be initially available in the cities of Delhi NCR, Chennai and Bangalore with phased roll-out to additional cities of Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Customers can gain access to 16 Mbps broadband by choosing from 2 Tariff Plans –

  • Speed Combo 2999 - receive 16 Mbps broadband speed with monthly data transfer limit of 20 GB along with a fixed line connection at Rs. 2999 per month
  • Speed Combo 4999 – receive 16 Mbps broadband speed with monthly data transfer limit of 50 GB along with a fixed line connection at Rs. 4999 per month

What do you think of the rates? Given the speed and bandwidth I actually find the price appealing, I must add here that this is partly because of the surprisingly big bills that MTNL has served me at times for far lesser data access. Anyway, I don’t want this post to be a comparison debate at the moment. The intriguing part about the X MBPS speeds that a lot of providers launch is that they are mega bits per second and not mega bytes, so the download speed that you get in general less than because of the conversions that apply from bits to bytes. I am pretty sure that is the same case with this plan from Airtel. So don’t expect to download a 16MB file in a second if you get this connection, it might still take 4 or 5..which actually isn’t bad to think.

Airtel has quickly adopted an aggressive marketing strategy online to go with this news. I was completely out of the web for a week, so I don’t know when exactly did this site - impatientones.com go live, but that’s a new microsite by Airtel to promote their fast broadband service, and is running banners promoting it on high profile sites.

It is interesting to note however that, Tata Teleservices had announced a 100 MBPS broadband access last month. The fairly unheralded piece of news spoke about how Tata Teleservices has become the first operator to introduce the more advanced wide area ethernet technology in place of the more common digital subscriber line (DSL) based technology for broadband. So there you go, Airtel isn’t lying when it says it is the fastest with 16MBPS in DSL providers. The Tata connection however comes at a hefty 10,000 price tag every month though. In the announcement then, TTML said it has already connected around 20,000 buildings in Mumbai with wide area ethernet technology.

Now all this speed is great, but will the connection maintain its integrity and give me a seamless experience? Will any of these providers give me an experience where I wouldn’t need to expereince their customer service at all? I think that’s the crux of any provider these days. Speed and who comes first with it is good enough only for bloggers to write about, but giving a hasslefree connection and giving it in even the most remote regions of our country is the bigger point in hand.

IRCTC Propelling E-commerce in India

In India online ticketing has been the most successful force in online E-commerce industry. This also supplemented by the fact that today online travel industry constitutes 78% of the total E-commerce industry in India.

IRCTC -playing an important role?

Its estimated gross annual sales of Rs.3400 crore constitutes 1/3rd of the total ecommerce industry worth Rs.9000 crores in India.

It has been witnessing a healthy annual growth of 100% in no. of tickets sold through online inititatives which stands at 45million tickets FY08.

It owns one of the largest agent networks for selling travel products in India by way of their various inititaives like cyber cafe chains, authorized distributors.

Its tickets are also being sold in association with other travel portals like yatra, cleartrip etc.

IRCTC-potential for Domino effect on E-commerce?

IRCTC currently levies additional charges for i-tickets which ranges from rs.10 to rs.40 and for e-tickets it ranges from Rs.40 to Rs.60. The charges, if these charges are reduced or abolished it could increase penetration and induce more people into E-commerce.

The service is mostly used by agents who charge additional commission apart from charges levied by IRCTC from their customers this again limits the penetration level and if the users are given more payment avenues it could propel many to go for direct transactions.

Online ticketing has always been the entry point for first time E-commerce users thus making more payment avenues available through association with commercial banks may help in getting more traction.

If railways also allow booking of rail cargos and other railway services on a large scale then it can definitely garner more traction in terms of higher transaction size and remove bottlenecks at the same time attracting SME to the fold.

Other  services-holding potential:

INDIA POST -another government affiliated organization currently delivers 1,575 crore mails every year linking every nook and corner of the country through a network of 1,54,149 post offices and 5,64,701 letter boxes. The government owned services like India post if implements E-commerce in a serious way then India could definitely remove the barriers of E-commerce industry.

Exclusive: YelloJobs Shut Indian Operations - Looking To Get Acquired?

You are reading it here first: We have got information from several reliable sources informing us that Yellojobs India which had its office in Noida is shutting all operations and laid off all the staff. We tried calling on the helpline numbers for employers and candidates given on the site but both are switched off. We have tried calling their PR representative as well but have not been able to get through. We spoke to the ex-GM of YelloJobs Vikramjit Singh Sahaye who informed us that he had quit Yellojobs in end of February and moved on to join elsewhere. He refused to comment on the status of yellojobs to us.

But as per our information Yellojobs referral model never really took off in a big way and they were in deep trouble since the recession hit the indian economy around october last year.  We are also told that during the same time their mother company yello media was looking to raise funds but failed to do so and hence the lack of funding has caused them to pull the plug.  Our sources also updated us that most of the employees had not been paid salaries since 3 months and a  shut down was eminent.

Yellojobs entered India through a partnership with NDTV media for NDTV jobs and a year later decided to discontinue the partnership and go on its own. Since then the job market started to tank due to recession and even bigwigs like naukri stated that a slowdown in the jobs market is eminent.

YelloJobs is a part of Yello media a bangkok based firm which owns classifieds across Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and India. We have been told that Yellojobs is looking for a suitor to buy out its India business and has currently stopped all operations in India. Whether they are managing the website from out of India in the meanwhile isn’t confirmed.

Nokia To Get Into Netbooks - Android As OS For Netbooks?

Earlier Brian Caulfield argues on Forbes that Nokia could kill the netbook, pointing at the company’s flagship device N97, though the convergence  of mobile computing and phone is finally coming into existence, it doesn’t seem quite like N97 will kill netbook business for the simple reason that a user need not want to carry his mobile computing device in his pocket.

The latest news is that Finnish Mobile phone manufacturer is actually considering venturing into Netbook business, what makes the news all the more interesting is Nokia is more likely to run it’s mobile operating system Symbian on the netbooks.

“We don’t have to look even for five years from now to see that what we know as a mobile phone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging,”CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told broadcaster YLE when questioned about Nokia’s aspirations towards the lap. “We are looking very actively also at this opportunity”.

In another news on WSJ, Hewlett Packard, the largest maker of PCs and a major Windows partner is testing Google’s Android operating system on netbooks. “We want to assess the capability Android may have for the computer and communications industries, and so we are studying it,” said Satjiv Chahil, a vice president of HP’s PC division as quoted on WSJ and reportedly DELL and Taiwan’s Asustek, leading seller of netbooks are also considering making an android version of netbooks.

Google, a company now synonymous with search is already in competition with Microsoft’s Office suite with Google apps and now Google’s efforts pushing Android on to netbooks put’s it in direct competition with Windows. Market research firm NPD group Inc. estimates that Windows comes on more than 90% of new netbooks. While Microsoft earns more than 60% of it’s revenues with Windows. Google which doesn’t charge for android hopes to justify its development effort by driving more Web use from mobile devices.

Mobile-facts, a community-based company has earlier tried porting Android onto Asus EEEPC 1000H and found that apart from initial hitches with network and sound,web browser and music player were running fine and though the Asus screen is approximately 5 times bigger than G1 screen, there was no issue in screen adaptation and Android did the adaptation automatically.

The linux version of netbooks didn’t quite seem to take off yet as they didn’t easily work with popular programs and peripherals like printers and though android could face the same issues if Google puts its resources we probably could see a platform shift.

The Gen-Next Social Applications - Are You Working On One?

There have been talks about various companies designing new social applications for its consumers. There have been various posts on the web talking about the changes in social media marketing in the future with the help of social applications and tools. Sure, Social Applications will change the future of Social Media; but how soon is the questions. There are evidences in form os companies such as ON24 which are clearly defining the extent to which Social Media can have a positive impact on our lives in the future by coming up with an extensive solution for all virtual events.

I am awaiting the next gen social apps and my wait can actually be termed very optimistic because there are so many people in India who don’t understand Social Media. But, then this slide show makes my belief strong about the emergence of something radically innovative in the near future.

Google Partners HT Media - Launches Google Election Centre

Well we have blogged about the various online initiatives leveraging the upcoming elections but here comes the big one by Google. Google has partnered the likes of Association for Democratic Reforms, HT Media Limited, Indicus Analytics, the Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy, the Liberty Institute, and PRS Legislative Services to launch what would be a called an information website for the upcoming elections. Google calls it the Google India Elections Centre.

Google India Elections Centre is available in both English and Hindi and aims at providing the following services to prospective voters:

The website will allow users to..

  • Confirm their voter registration status
  • Discover their polling location
  • View their constituency on a map
  • Consume relevant election-related news, blogs, videos, and quotations
  • Evaluate the status of development in their constituency across a range of indicators
  • Learn about the background of their Member of Parliament and this year’s candidates

Yahoo too recently launched its election portal and this move by google has come just at the the right time to counter Yahoo. Election is probably the largest public event that comes once in every 5 years and this time around as the internet userbase is fairly large (compared to 5 years ago) most sites believe that the elections might be opportunity to get more users come online and engage on the web.

Social Networking Monetization - What India Can Learn From China?

Social Networking as most know is one of the really hyped and also one of the most used applications on the Web today. Social Networking is not a fad but more a global phenomenon thats getting more engrained in the social behaviour of people in general.

While the numbers for Global social networking giants like Facebook, Myspace, Orkut and Bebo are large they are still not making the tonnes of millions of dollars that a Google is making via search or a Yahoo is making via its properties. This fact begs the question whether Advertising is the right business model for social networks? Im sure Indian social networks like Bigadda, Ibibo, Indyarocks and others are already asking themselves this question.

The question that also arises is that are any of the social networks globally making tonnes of money? Well the answer is yes and its India’s Neighbors China which is the answer!

Techcrunch has an indepth analysis on the chinese social networking market and its monetization strategy. Here are key points from the post:

Social Commerce bigger than Ads?

‘12% of Qzone - A Large chinese social network (Probably the largest in the world) revenue stems from online advertising with the rest coming from virtual item sales such as applications and avatars.’

The above statement is shocking to say the least and now consider this.. The total revenue of the company that runs Qzone is over $1 billion in 2008. Now then Are we missing the point somewhere? None of the Indian social networks have even attempted social commerce. A mind block or is India different to China?

Are Chinese a Different lot? What’s their demographic?

There are 300 million Chinese online users and 66.7 % of them are younger than 29 years old and 35.2 % of them are teenagers. Well if Im correct India’s demographic would be similar if not the same given that India too is a very young country. So what else could be the issues? Credit cards?

App Economy and Monetization

The Chinese social networks seemed to have aped the Facebook open api app economy fairly well and guess what they have introduced payment api which means developers pay the social network to build apps. Infact there are three montization models for apps - shared ad revenues, income through virtual currencies, and customized development for branded applications.

Now again none of the social network have introduced apps Bigadda, Ibibo, Desimartini, Bharatstudent, Minglebox none have any app platform. Makes you wonder if there is too much dependency on ad revenue.

All in all there is a clear lack of innovation is seen in the Indian social networks when it comes to monetization. They are still pursuing ads and to some extent social branding as the only mechanism to earn revenue. If these social networks need to survive in the longterm they would have to look at more options in terms of monetization and the Chinese options might just be a starting point to learn adapt and make your own.

3G Gets Poor Response - A Pricing Or Device Issue? - Impact On Auctions?

State Owned Telecom firms MTNL and BSNL had launched 3G facilities a couple of months ago even though the auctions for the private players had been in a quandry. MTNL had launched its services in Mumbai and Delhi while BSNL launched 3G across 14 cities.

Dismal Response To 3G

The response so far to the 3G has been dismal. A total of 3200 subsribers in 2 months at a rate of 125 subscribers a month.

A report by The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) had projected that as much as 10% of the 375 million mobile customers would shift to 3G services in the first year itself. At the current rate that number of 37 million looks very unlikely.

Who to blame for 3G Lacklustre Adoption?

Though its still early days one can get the sense that the much hyped 3G may meet a luke warm response and follow through. The blame would be put squarely on the 3G charges which are surely on the higher side. The other dampner could be the fact that the iphone which is probably the best phone for usage of 3G is still at an obscenely high price and out of reach for most. This again reduces the need for 3G as most users who are on any other phone are probably using the phone as an email checking device and not an entertainment device. Hence maybe when touch devices like the iphone get really cheap a need for faster data connectivity would be felt on the mobile.

What about the 3G auctions now?

The DoT was quoted recently as stating that it would be difficult to start 3G auctions before the polls which just means that in another 2 months if the 3G uptake by users still remains dismal then it would surely dampen the upcoming auctions. In anycase a lot of debate on the license fees has been going on and constant delays have been made due to the same.

To me it seems like the 3G auctions are doomed  as of now unless by some miracle the the 3G numbers increase and the private players get motivated and gung ho about offering 3G.

IPL Teams Launch Websites & Fan Zones

The Indian Premiere League is less than two weeks away and the buzz is starting to build up. The TV campaigns have been launched and so have the websites of the respective teams. Lets look at all the IPL websites and what have they been upto..

Kolkata Knight Riders - Leading the pack is Shahrukh khans kolkata knight riders which have not only revamped their website but also added a fan zone for fans. What’s more there are features like KKR TV, KKR Academy and a merchandize store as well. They also have official presence on facebook, twitter and orkut.

The website also has a section named SRK blogs which is still to be updated which means SRK may go blogging as well to promote his IPL team. SRK’s team has already created a lot of buzz with the TV show for cheer leaders and I expect their website to do the same.

Rajasthan Royals - Close on the heals of SRK’s knights come the defending champions of IPL Rajasthan royals. Rajasthan royals have the most complete website which has a new addition with the fan zone which is its presence across social media with communities on facebook, youtube, twitter and the indian smsgupshup. It also has a forum for discussion around the team. Its mobile zone powered by smsgupshup already boasts of over 25000 members. This may rise with the ipl and shilpa shetty’s association with the team.

Delhi Daredevils - Delhi boys come a close third. They have an official partnership with Bigadda which has a sizeable Indian audience though the group on bigadda is still to kick off in a big way. They also have an smsgupshup group which has over 29000 members. On the website itself they have a blog but its not been up to date. Also they have merchandise buying options.

Deccan Chargers -They have an sms gupshup group with over 23000 members and a chargers lounge section which has a graphitti board and a discussion forum. They lack any other social media presence on orkut facebook etc.

Chennai Super kings - They have a blog which is well updated and a fan zone on their websites

Mumbai Indians - Mumbai Indian just have a fan zone and a discussion forum with about 1276 active users.

Royal challengers - Royal challengers website is powered by MSN India and they are offering email ids to users.

Kings XI Punjab - This is the only team which is yet to launch its web presence. Its says coming soon.

All in all the teams are yet to hit the zone when it comes to their websites even though the chatter around the web about the upcoming IPL has already started to flow. It will be interesting to track and see how the teams use their websites to garner more support.
