"Digital Takes All in the Afaqs Buzziest Brands of 2009 Report" from "WATBlog.com - Web, Advertising and Technology Blog in India"

Digital Takes All in the Afaqs Buzziest Brands of 2009 Report

Airtel, Facebook, Google, Idea & Nokia formed the top 5 of the buzziest brands of 2009 released by Afaqs.com. And as digital media enthusiasts this is certainly pleasing for a lot of us. 2009 is the fourth edition of Buzziest brands and Airtel has successfully maintained its numero uno position of the last 3 years this time as well. And save for a Tata event he sixth position would have gone to another mobile player- Vodafone.

This is what the report said about the winner:

“..Airtel received about 30 per cent more votes than the runner up, Idea. Airtel truly proves that buzz is a byproduct of doing a whole lot of things in an exciting way. Three of the six judges voted for the brand. The percentage of voters who supported Airtel: 46.7 per cent.”

With Google and Facebook coming in at number 3 and 2 respectively, even the web finds its place in buzzy sun. Interesting point to note here is that these two Internet behemoth don’t advertise their business in India at all, while the other digital media - mobile has its players on a campaign warfare on traditional as well as new media. Point to moot - branding is everything and it is a factor of business innovation as much as it is about promotion.

What takes things in favour of digital media is the reach and scope that they can achieve. The digital eco-system is perhaps the only one that is in constant use for users. We are on the mobile all the time, we use our PCs and Laptops throughout the day and therefore they are spoken about most of the time thus building buzz. It therefore makes sense for marketers and brands to be on the medium a lot more to associate with this buzz. For instance, one doesn’t read a newspaper throughout the day, or watch television or travel on the road for hours at a stretch everyday. The connectivity therefore that digital media especially mobile provides therefore is at the root of the buzz and it can easily be translated on to the brands that are present on these media as well.

Tata, Times of India, Taj Hotels and Kingfisher were the other players in the top 10. You can read the complete analysis of the buzziest brands here.

Ibibo Announces iHunk

So the beginning of 2009 seems to be keeping ibibo.com busy as it did towards the end of 2008. They announced the launch of a new application - iHunk, for young men across India to showcase their talent, and create their audience and fan club in order to enter the business of modeling.

Ashish Kashyap, CEO of Ibibo says,"Seeing the success and recognition achieved for the young women through ibibo iFreshFace, we wanted to extend a similar platform for the young men in the country. All these initiatives are part of our vision to provide a platform to the ibibo community to showcase their talent and get recognition. We will continue to incubate such applications across various genres."

Ibibo is banking on what has worked for it in the past and its own unique model of tie up and integrated contests. It had launched similar efforts like iVideostar, iFreshface, SingurDil and iFashion Photographer earlier. WATBlog had also reviewed this model back when iVideostar was launched in December. Rajiv had concluded then that Ibibo is focusing on being a talent showcase platform via these contests and has a strong focus on entertainment.  And not to forget the word of mouth that such endeavors can generate.

However, clearly as the earlier initiatives now suggest, there isn’t enough sustainability compared to other new media apps that we hear. It is not a big problem really, and the silver lining is fresher content.

The January contest has ended and the users have picked a winner ( Sanjay Khan is the most popular iHunk of the month) while the February contest is still going on. Every month, the community will vote for their favourites and one young man will be named iHunk of the month and will win a two-year modeling contract with Elite Model Management and also get an exclusive portfolio shot by photographer, Subi Samuel.

MakeMyTrip.com Travels to Airtel DTH

MakeMyTrip.com and Airtel DTH announced earlier this week that the travel portal will provide information about its holiday packages to Airtel’s DTH users.

The packages will be available on the iTravel interactive channel of Airtel Digital TV. To buy a package, viewers can send an SMS to a particular code and will be contacted by the MMT sales team to complete the purchase.

Afaqs makes a fine point when it says that DTH operators can only differentiate themselves through their channel packages and interactive content. Therefore, content alliances, such as this, help in retaining viewers. And we have seen this earlier as well with the online matrimony space tying up with DTH providers.

Makemytrip has been in pursuit of other avenues since deciding to move out of its core business of air ticketing. We had covered them claiming the largest bus ticket inventory for instance a while back. The itneresting point to note in this news is that the service is for users to buy holiday packages, again anon core business that Makemytrip has been focussing on since some while. Deep Karla had mentioned about these revenue streams in his WATShow with us.

However, I actually have doubts on how far this media could work to build revenues for Makemytrip. To me it just seems an added marketign line that Airtel can use to sell it’s DTH package. Holiday is usually a planned affair and can’t be decided on a whim looking at a TV channel no matter how alluring a package they display..it’s not grocery after all. On the brighter side however, this can drive more people to Makemytrip’s site to make the booking or find more information, perhaps housewives or the college crowd ( i.e. segments yet to digitise themselves completely).

The chances of hearing news like this is something we had predicted in  one of our analysis of the OTA and Travel space:

“…The situation also calls for aggressive marketing tactics which can be expected in a highly competitive market. While the downside of course is the dwindling pie, on the other hand it can drive up growth of the online segment which will be good for the entire Indian e-commerce industry in general. Aggressive marketing will also bring in VAS into play with added dangling carrots for the user. So one can expect travel discounts, combined holiday packages, convenient booking systems and perhaps more intuitive and hassle free interfaces….”

And there is still scope to hear more stuff on these lines this year.

Sify Plans 2000 Single PC Internet Kiosks - To Focus On Iways

about3Increased scope of advertising revenues through cafe's and kiosks is helping companies revert their old stand of addition to their cyber cafe chain being put to backburner.

As part of its plan to expand in the Indian internet service retail business, net service provider Sify is planning to venture into single-PC internet kiosk business, besides opening 2,000 additional outlets of its iWay internet cafe chain.

Sify’s Strategy for their Iway chains:

Aman Mehra, Sify National head (expansion) told PTI, "We have started a pilot project in single-PC internet kiosk format and have tied up with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to provide customer facilities. We are planning to take this format to all the metros and are in talks with some government agencies,"

The company has approached the Department of Information Technology (DIT) for collaboration in the project.
They are also expanding their iWay chain with plans to set up 2,000 more internet cafes by 2009-10, up from the existing 3,000 outlets. For the iWay project, they are focussing  more on Tier II and III cities where internet and pc penetration is still low and would try to have uniform rate for all customers

All the new single-PC internet kiosks and iWay outlets would be franchise operated. Sify's single-PC kiosks would be low-investment manned outlets, providing 45 services including internet, VOIP, travel booking and online bill payment.

in_im08

Changing scenario:

Many online players are looking at entering into cybercafe space despite very harsh measures being taken by government after the recent mumbai blasts.

The main reason of this drive could be attributed to ad revenues which firms are getting by selling desktop space or partial ownership rights of these kiosks and entry of players like ideacts could only improve scenario of Indian cyber cafe scenario.

In the days to come similar announcements could be seen from the likes of R-ADAG group for their zapak gameplexes and kiosks being formed by several other companies for services and interactions with their customers.
