The Game of Search - Changing Rules and Leadership in the Cacophony of Web Search

Search has been dominant enough on the web to create some of the biggest names in the Industry. And there is no denying who the most dominant name in the field. Google has now gone on to dominate other content niches while others are trying harder than ever to grab its place. Yahoo, Microsoft have always been vying for it since the time Google changed the dynamics of being a web publisher (Portals to search). With Wikia and Cuil, other information hubs have also tried their hands at cracking the search code.

With no imminent success in sight, local content has become the source of some huge competition. The attempt of course is to replicate Google’s success on the web on regional searches and mobiles, this is true specially in India, I wonder what the scenario is elsewhere. Google itself has been actively scouting for partners in mobile and local search along with Yahoo, while Microsoft has gone on to invest in a mobile firm

The game has also extended beyond content search to other avenues of information. Microsoft’s live search introduced maps, even Rediff introduced maps a couple of weeks back for instance. Google meanwhile went to try and bring TV to the map (please don’t miss the pun there). Everything is not rosy yet for Google with it lagging behind Yahoo in Japan and strange errors cropping up costing them embarrassment and dollars.

In the meanwhile, another medium is slowly rising up the ranks as competent alternative to big G. Quite a few marketers are now looking at Twitter and its conversational mannerisms as the perfect evolution of search. WATblog had also covered an article chronicling twitter monetization’s possibility the same way as Google and how it is fundamentally placed to be Google’s successor in search. Twitter with its fellow apps is changing the way search happens on the web. As more people begin to use their services with the intention of digging for information (no, no pun intended there) it will form new search habits, because the twitter search results are different from web search. It will make inroads into conversational marketing and be tie up the loose ends in conversations, search and research. Social bookmarking did this to an extent, but it being a system of traffic more than conversations didn’t quite alter the graph.

Search as we see it is changing before us. Search brought the first democracy on the web, and it is now rejuvenating.

MVAS Market Will Reach Rs 6000-8000 Crore by 2012 - MVAS Conference

The Indian Merchants’ Chambers (IMC), organized a meet on Mobile Value Added Services Conference in Mumbai. The conference focused on MVAS for 3G networks and applications in India, mobile commerce in India, VAS in rural markets, Mobile VAS funding and social networking and mobile marketing/advertising on mobiles.

According to CIOL’s report the discussion ranged from the disparity in revenue sharing and the dwindling profits. The panel also expected MVAS to be one of the few industries that can snag double digit growth even in this slowdown. S S Sirohi, deputy director general – VAS, BSNL shed light on to this expectation from the telecom sector.

“The competition and regulations in telecom industry has allowed low tariffs to users, however it has lowered the revenues and profits for the operators,” said Sirohi.

“The pressure on profits and revenues has forced the operators to look at other avenues using the same platform. And MVAS has an immense potential to grow and currently the MVAS market is worth around Rs 2000-3000 crore against the telecom market of Rs 14000 crore,” added Sirohi. He also added that the MVAS market will reach Rs 6000-8000 crore by 2012 and services such as mobile banking, mobile commerce and mobile location base services will grow with the 3G spectrum.

The panel comprised of:

  • Peeyush Agrawal, chief general manager – Wireless Services, MTNL
  • S S Sirohi, deputy director general – VAS, BSNL
  • Vijay Mukhi
  • Nitesh Mittersain, IMC’s convener, Mobile and IT Committee

JPG Magazine Back on Track After Near Death Experience

JPG the popular photography magazine with user generated content is back from the gallows. Seth Familian, the VP of Product Management at JPG Magazine explains in this blog post.

"Our new investors agree with you–and believe strongly in the potential of JPG as a business. So I’m looking forward to working with them to creatively drive revenues while enhancing the quality of the JPG experience. I’m also looking forward to working with our Premier Community Partner, Adorama, to develop wonderful opportunities for all of you to reach a broader audience as well as better engage around the photography equipment you use and love."

A couple of months ago as I opened my mailbox, I found a mail from the editors of JPG magazine announcing that it was shutting down (along with its publisher 8020 media) due to financial reasons, saying that the recent economic crisis and the associated slump in advertisement hit them hard. They said that the portal would be shutting down formally on 5th January.

What happened over the next few days was simply fascinating. On 2nd January, they published this blog entry:

"With our most recent announcement that we will be closing 8020 and JPG, we received an enormous amount of support from the community. Thank you for that — it means a lot to the team here and it shows that JPG is made up of wonderful people. Along with that support, we have also received some interest from qualified parties who may be interested in acquiring the company so that JPG could live on. We don’t want to get your hopes up unnecessarily, but there is nothing we would want more then for JPG to continue in some form, and we are working on that now. Stay tuned and let’s keep our collective fingers crossed."

A portal http://savejpg.com/ was setup which became the mouth pice for all those who wanted to save JPG as well as a common meeting point. Apart from this there were also discussions about why the management didn't inform the members of the situation earlier all over the web.

But it looks as if all is well now at the media house.

JPG magazine is a reader generated photography journal which has nearly 2 lakh online members and is a quite well known photography portals on the web. The best photos from the web are published in their magazine which is published 6 times a year.

Last year, JPG raised a lot of eyebrows when it's founders announced their retirement claiming that the CEO of 8020 media wanted to minimize their contribution.

YouTube Getting Stronger and Perhaps Cracking Better Ways To Monetize

Earlier today I blogged about NDTV’s cricket portal where I also put in a few words about their video portal Tubaah. My view was owning the copyright of the content shared on the web will help garner better revenues as it will attract advertisers. Now there are reports flying of Youtube.com and Universal Music tying up to create a new web service named Vevo. Vevo is said to be a premium service to deliver music videos to online users.

What makes the news huge is the size of those involved in the deal. Universal Music is the biggest music group in the world with some of the biggest artists on their roster. On the other hand we have a web service that has gone on to define a whole new category of web marketing. Finally Youtube can have control over the content while still touching base with its core audience. How exactly will this association impact viewership and how are Universal and Youtube going to earn their share of revenue seem exciting to think of.

While the above deal works out something beyond pre-roll, post-roll, mid-roll and others Youtube has certainly given advertisers something to think of by pulling in some huge traffic numbers in January. Youtube topped over a 100 million viewers in January 2009. Approximately 147 million US Internet users watched an average of 101 online videos each in January, with 102 million of those people using Google-owned sites, according to comScore. Ninety-nine percent of the video viewing at Google websites took place at YouTube, comScore reported.

I wonder if this has anything to do with a lot of people losing jobs and sitting at home. :)..oh wait that’s not something to smile about.

GoM setup for 3G auction,BSNL expands 3G service to 11 cities

Finally things seem to pickup for the 3G auction, reported earlier on Jan29 on GoM to be setup, the Government has yesterday setup a GOM( Group of Ministers) to resolve the issues on 3G auction which include setting the base price for the auction and finalizing the number of slots firms can bid for in the 20 of India's 22 service areas to be covered by the sale. The GoM reportedly includes Mr Pranab Mukherjee (External Affairs), Mr Lalu Prasad (Railway), Mr Ram Vilas Paswan (Chemical and Fertilisers), Mr A. Raja (Telecom), Mr Anand Sharma (I&B), Mr Sharad Pawar (Agriculture), Mr A. K. Antony (Defence), Mr H.R. Bhardwaj (Law) and the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

The auction will be conducted by the independent auctioneer, N.M. Rothschild once the issues are resolved by GoM.Though there’s a chance that the auction might take place in the UPA government, the pace of Governments actions on the issue might further auction.

In another news BSNL has now extended the 3G services to 11 cities. The cities that will be covered under this are Agra, Ambala, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Dehradoon, Shimla, Lucknow, Ranchi, Durgapur, Haldia, Patna and soft launch in Jammu.

BSNL also announced tariff plans for 3G mobile services under pre-paid and post-paid voice, video and data plans. The voice call will be available for 10 paisa per minute under full value 1000 plan. Video calls start with Re1 under unlimited 2,500 plan and Rs 2 for STD video calls.

NDTV Convergence Revamps CricketNDTV.com - IPL Effect or Tubaah?

NDTV Convergence the digital arm of NDTV has announced a revamp of its cricket portal CricketNDTV.com. According to their release the new site features such as a video section providing coaching and fitness tips from renowned experts, a revamped blog section, quizzes, contests and a more exhaustive cricket calendar. It  appears that NDTV is banking heavily on the video coaching section on the site which dominates the new changes made on the portal. The coaching videos have been developed in partnership with coach Ian Pont.

It wouldn’t be far fetched to imagine that these changes have been made considering the IPL and other high profile tournaments coming this year. The domestic 20-20 league is hardly a month away and is already creating quite a buzz. Last year the Internet charts were soaring with the IPL buzz which also made quite a lot of business possible, ask Eklavya ;). The IPL is immediately followed by the 20-20 World Cup if I’m not wrong and India also has a busy touring shcedule including the tour to New Zealand right now. Timing wise this launch certainly seems to target the hype and business of Twenty20. Another reason of course being that a faster version like T20 offers a lot of viral like and popular video opportunities - Yuvraj’s six sixers for instance. This falls right in line with the changes that NDTV has made to the portal.

On the other hand, NDTV had announced the launch of its exclusive video portal a few weeks back. Rajiv considered it their biggest foray into the web products space. What gives Tubaah the advantage over other popular video sharing sites being NDTV owns the copyright on the content. This is the same reason Hulu.com had better earnings than YouTube (on a relative basis). The current crop of changes on CricketNDTV also aims at creating value content in one of the most popular niches online in India - Cricket. Therefore this piece of news can also be a direct follow up to the strategy of launching Tubaah.com.  The fact that Tubaah finds itself a prominent centerpiece place on the portal’s header only adds fuel to this thought.

And who knows, maybe both these reasons are driving the chain of launces and revamps at the NDTV stable.

However, if you search for cricket on Google, CricketNDTV isn’t anywhere in the top rankings, while other major cricket portals including network 18’s in.com which has all the makings of a prime competitor for NDTV convergence find their ranks in the top 10. This might mean NDTV will have to push some paid campaigns perhaps over on top of their network real estate to attract more audience.

Now You Can Remove IE From Windows, But There’s a Catch

…And the catch is that you will need Windows 7.

Microsoft is trying as hard as it can to sell Windows 7 to their consumers. And if it means correcting their act then so be it?

A while back,EU started protesting the bundling of IE in the OS since they claimed it killed the competition. Now we hear that maybe in the next version there will be a provision to remove IE from the OS. That’s what AeroXperience a Windows enthusiast community seems to be yelling in this blog post of theirs.

As of now the testers claim that one can only remove the IE8 executable file (iexplorer.exe) without messing up Windows.

The blog post also has detailed instructions for implementing this feature. The entire thing also requires 2 reboots and a configuration setup.

  1. Enter the Control Panel and look at "All Control Panel Options"
  2. Click "Programs and Features"
  3. In the left sidebar, click "Turn Windows Features On or Off" (you will be thrown a UAC prompt if you elevated UAC)
  4. Wait for the list to load.
  5. Look for Internet Explorer 8 in the list and uncheck it.
  6. Click OK. You will see a prompt notifying you of a reboot.
  7. The machine will reboot once, configure things, and reboot again.

Though personally my thoughts echo with those of the guys at Silicon Alley Insider apart from many others in the tech community. Why exactly is EU so worried? And don’t they know that Firefox, Chrome (which is catching up) are already competition enough for Microsoft?

Digital Media - A Key Medium For Movie Marketing?

Yesterday BC Webwise a digital agency announced that it had launched an exclusive arm for movie marketing on the digital media space. Now this made me wonder as to whether soon digital would be the key medium for buzz creation for movies going forward? There are many signs indication that it could be so..

Rise of the movie portals

For the last decade or so the bollywood space has been covered by the likes of Indiafm now renamed and rebranded Bollywoodhungama.com (owned by the hungama group) and Bollywoodsargam.com. But offlate there have been a bunch of bollywood centric portals that have sprung up. That also from big corporate houses like the Reliance group and Percept. These are cinecurry.com and bigoye.com which we covered here and here. Not to forget Network18 as well which has buzz18 covering the bollywood razzmatazz.

This trend indicates that more of more movie goers (especially the multiplex kinds) is flocking to the online space for reading reviews and views and dicusssions before going and watching a movie.

Rise of Microsites/Movie Sites

Of recently In.com has started the trend of hosting movie websites and promoting it via their portal. They did so for Singhiskingg and also for a few others. There has also been considerable free PR and publicity via official movie websites and a case in point is Dev D a small budget multiplex audience targetted movie which caused a stir with its adult website and lust line feature.

Rise of the Social Media & Gaming Phenomenon

Practically every decent movie last year has had an official facebook and orkut group and marketing and engagement through social media be it blogs and communities. This has been a big trend in the US and our last post on dark knight has discussed this with a video. But the trend is catching up in India as well with movie makers hiring professional agencies to handle their social media and buzz marketing for their films.

Facebook Fan Pages of Recent Movies

Billu Barber

Dev D

Dilli 6

All in all I expect Bollywood to contribute to the online medium in a big way in the future. Infact I feel three key verticals Bollywood, Politics and Cricket i.e.(IPL) would drive the online marketing for the next 3 years or so.

Dark Knight - Viral Marketing Campaign

In May 2007, 42 Entertainment began a viral marketing campaign utilizing the film’s “Why So Serious?” tagline.

This video is a must watch:

A transmedia experiment with over 10 million particpants in over 75 countries that played across hundreds of web pages, interactive games, mobile phones, print, email, real world events, video and unique collectibles! The internet was the thread which held together all the other spools (mediums).

Part of the campaign was a request by the Joker to hit local landmarks in full Joker make-up! From London to the Middle East. From Pennsylvania to India. Every participant became an evangelist of the movie!

Youtube throws up more than 199,000 results for the term Dark Knight!

The results?
The most advance pre-sale tickets ever sold! Opening night, morning, midnight, 3AM and 6AM shows were sold out across the US. It recorded the biggest opening day of all time! Dark Knight was also the top grossing film of the year.

Closer to home, Ghajini did a good job of using the internet, but it was a little ahead of its times. What really worked well was the Aamir Khan hair-do and the stunt within cinema halls. This got hours and hours of free PR via TV channels and could have been better leveraged using the internet. Ghajini went on to become the highest grossing Bollywood movie till date.

What new age marketers need to realise is that the web shouldn’t be treated as a separate property. One should use the web to bind the other mediums together.

DOT Selects Telcordia & Syniverse for MNP implementation

Looks like DOT is now firm on its decision to start mobile number portability by August, though I am not quite sure of the impetus that is driving these actions, where the 3G auction has not seen the day of light yet. MNP for sure will turn out to be in the favor of mobile consumers in India, with consumers being able to retain the same number while choosing to change mobile operator.

It is reported that the Department of Telecom has selected two companies, Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bell Communications) and Syniverse Technologies to provide solutions for implementation of mobile number portability in the country.

Apparently Telcordia Technologies and Syniverse Technologies were selected from a list of many global and Indian companies shortlisted earlier. Both the companies will provide solutions for 11 circles each of the total 22 circles in the country. Both the companies are big players in telecom solutions and have already implemented their MNP services in different countries.

The government had issued guidelines for awarding of MNP service licences in August 2008 and is hoping to implement MNP in all the four metros and category ‘A’ circles within six months of awarding the licenses.

Get a bride who looks like Aishwarya Rai!

Matrimony search couldn’t probably get shallower than the Facial Search utility launched by BharatMatrimony.com. They now enable you to find a bride who looks like Aishwarya Rai or Priyanka Chopra!

If this was launched as a fun Social Media application, BharatMatrimony could have really benefited from it. Users could have been made to add the pictures and send results to their friends. This could have been viral and fun and BharatMatrimony could have really benefited by saying - Matrimony search can be fun too.

I’d blogged (Who’s your celebrity look alike?) about something similar nearly 2 years back. It was a face recognition tool by MyHeritage and their service was highly blogged about. Mainly because it was fun and cool to share.

But at the end of the day, this product might actually work in the smaller cities. Especially for families which still want a pretty face as a bahu and don’t care about qualites like intelligence, hard-working, caring, honest etc. I guess its the Indian mentality which is at fault here for BM to actually launch such a utility. If they can actually make money of this…hats off to them!

As far as the results of the Facial Search are concerned…

Searched for: Bengali - Aishwarya Rai look alike :-)

You can see the results!

My Dubai Trip & Vodafone’s Obscene Roaming Charges!

Well the financial year end is nearing and so are the Indian Lok Sabha Elections. Business is slow this quarter as everyone looks towards the elections and the new financial year to bring respite from the slowdown. While all this happens I thought it was a good time to take a break..

Its been 2 years now that Ive been working non stop and blogging almost every single day. So today im flying off to Dubai for a 10 day holiday trip and also to check out the Internet City out there. Well I would still blog from Dubai but for those who would like to get in touch with me on phone Im less likely to respond as Im stuck with Vodafone and its obscene call charges (More on it below). Catching me on mail would be more cost effective. Email me at rajiv(at)watblog.com.

Obscene Roaming Charges

I called vodafone to know about my roaming charges when Im in Dubai and ‘I was shocked’ would be an understatement. The following are the roaming charges that were told to me by vodafone.

1) Rental of Rs.149 to activate international roaming

2) Rs. 115 per minute for an incoming call from India!!!

3) Rs.185 per minute for an outgoing call to India!!!

4) Rs.15 per sms

Wow! My Jaw dropped when I heard these charges. I thought I was still in the last few years of the 20th century where mobiles were a luxury and call rates were in the hundreds.

vodafone sucks

This is where I feel Mobile number portability (MNP) would come in. I mean im a 7 year old customer of Orange which became Hutch and now Vodafone. My average billing per month is Rs.3000 atleast. And If MNP was implemented right now Im sure I could have bargained given my value as a customer to vodafone. Just like one can get discounts at hotels which is also a services business. The problem with telecom is my phone number binds me to a telecom player and because of that there is no concept of consumer is king! Right now the operator is king (and also very greedy) and he is filling his treasure with my hard earned money!
