@Headstart 09 Bangalore - Ideas are easy, Execution is key! - Ashish Gupta, MD Helion Ventures

ashish guptaPossibly one of the best talks Ive heard on startups and entrepreneurship. Ashish Gupta illustrated points on how to execute and execute well. His focus was technology startups. A great start to headstart09 on day 2.

Ideas are easy but execution is key

Outside in vs inside out function

a) Pay attention to outbound functions - Sales, marketing.
b) Identify why the customer will NOT buy. Having an outside in view is key!
c) In customer meeting, listen more talk less.
i) Listen to the customer not to yourself
d) Simple stuff has a premium
e) Companies die more often because of bad sales and marketing than bad implementation
f) Marketing is more than advertising

Organization Structure

1) Comple Clarity on organization - one person can have multiple
2) Most people do not scale - remove people from wrong roles
3) Change org structure as needed - no correct answers

Metrics

1) Identify what to measure - very hard
2) Measure everything important be it engineering, sales etc
3) Process and discipline are key

Horizons

Awareness horizon - 2 x Planning horizon
Planning Horizon - 2 x Execution horizon

According to ashish gupta one should spend more time getting aware on his/her particular function and the surrounding evironment. He stated that one should spend twice the time on awareness as one spends on planning and twice the time on planning as one spends on execution in order to set oneself up for scaling for the future.

10 of the Most Watched WATShows in 2008

WATBlog’s video channel WATShow had an excellent run last year with some kick ass interviews, our own Youtube channel (I know not all that big a deal but we be eexccited!), and some good number of views and subscribers on Youtube (Thanks :)). So to keep up with the excitement, and to set up the standards for 2009 we have compiled the most watched WATShows from 2008, the top 10 of 08. Let’s take a nostalgic trip and view them once again.

10. Coming in at No.10 with 672 views is the WATShow with Alok Kejriwal of Games2win.com on why they make naughty games, and other such WATquestions.

9. The 9th and the 8th on the list weret eh women folk of digital media, and it was a pretty close call, with 684 views Dina Mehta’s interview was the 9th most watched WATShow.

8. One viewer made all the difference to Ezeego1’s Neelu Singh, whose WATShow was 8th with 685 views.

7. NDTV Convergence’s Sanjay Trehan did a WATShow over 7 months ago and his interview garnered 724 views to come at 7th on the WATShow list of ‘08.

6. Blink Media a Proto.in nominee at the Delhi edition last year has to be the dark horse of the list, raking in 787 views, guess that shows the power of WOM and innovation in general.

5. The top 5 begins with a WATGame.com video of Alone in the Dark

4. CEO of Kreeda Games, Quentin States-Polet’s WATShow made it to the top 5 with 856 views on the WATBlog channel.

3. The coveted 3rd place went to Manish Agarwal, VP- Marketing of Rediff, whos poke about Rediff iShare and Web 2.0 in general in one of our earliest WATShows’ last year. It also garnered over 1300 views which made Rajiv and the WAT Team very happy.

2. Gaming got big on the WATShow list with Games2win, Kreeda, Alone in The Dark making it to the list, but Zapak took the cake, the cherry and the views with the WATShow with Rohit Sharma, COO of Zapak Entertainment making the cut as the second most watched WATshow with 1405 views.

1. The most watched WATShow of 2008 was one of the first WATshows to be showcased on WATBlog’s Youtube Channel. And it is a pretty unique contender considering the interview was of Harbinder Narula leaving Google to join the mobile firm Aryty. The video garnered nearly 2000 views (1934 to be precise).

Thanks to everyone who watched WATShows and read WATBlog and who we believe continue to add value to the WAT community, what we do is nothing without your participation and support. And we hope to make your visits to our sites more useful this year.

Satyam’s Ramalinga Raju Arrested - Board Suspended By Govt

Well it had to happen. We had blogged about Satyam’s Chairman Raju’s resignation letter and how it was one of the worst bit of corporate news for IT in India. Now come the repurcussions of the same with Raju surrendering to the police and being taken in custody for various charges.

The government has finally intervened and suspended the existing board as they too aren’t trustworthy given what has transpired in the last few days. Satyam stock has stopped trading in BSE and also the Nifty and singapore indices.

Also the big impact of this fiasco is on the 50000+ employees that satyam have. Apparently 20,000 resumes have been floating around in the last few days but Infosys and Nasscom both have taken a stand not to hire/poach Satyam’s employees. In a press conference the interim CEO of Satyam stated that they might just have enough money to pay December salaries which means heavy layoff’s is expected unless someone comes and acquires them and saves the day.

All in all satyam is the talk of the country and even at the Headstart event where we are today most startups were discussing the impact of this on the IT Industry. All I can say is whatever the impact it wont be good.

@Headstart 09 Bangalore - Innovation in Consumer Services

The second panel in headstart was on Innovation in Consumer Services.

The panelists were:

  • Amit Dayal from Yahoo
  • Kiran Anandampillai from Onmobile
  • Rajesh Sawhney from Reliance Entertanment
  • Kiran Konduri from AskLaila
  • Moderated by Harish Gandhi, Canaan Partners

The focus of the discussion was: How entrepreneurs can take advantage of consumer market dynamics and lead to innovative services?

The discussion was initiated by Kiran Konduri  who stated that the boom in consumer market is expected in the future. He also expects incomes to triple in about 15-20 years which means that there will be a lot of disposable income and a lot of spending by consumer on interesting services.  He felt India is very positively poised with the demographics being even better as we are such a young nation that needs even more innovation in services.

Amit stated how are emerging markets are important for Yahoo - India, LatAm and SE Asia. He said “It is really exciting to be in the consumer space. He said that the Indian market is just starting up and there are a number of large problems that are still yet to be solved unlike US where things are getting more and more saturated. There is a opportunity to look at interesting stuff like enabling communication and processes.”

Kiran (Anandampillai) pointed out that internet has been the channel for delivery of most services in western markets but now with mobiles in place, there is a potential of such services in India as well. Kiran (Konduri) added saying that the half a billion devices (mobiles) are looking for right kind of innovation and this fact is exciting.

Rajesh Sawhney explained the journey of Reliance Entertainment from Adlabs to present day of “BIG” platform. He outlined how Reliance has the largest online games chain that Reliance is running in addition of Bigflix and Bigadda. He then spoke about the large opportunity that Reliance is seeing in Indian demographics moving forward.

Amit Dayal said there is a potential to use Google and Facebook’s eyeballs by using OpenSocial or Facebook Apps and if you do that then there is no need of building a distribution network. Kiran Anandampillai pointed out that another potential model is the operator led model in Mobile VAS. Kiran (Konduri) answered this question by saying that in the last 3-4 years, the classified business has built up really nicely because of the internet infrastructure thanks to players like Sify and others.

The panel concluded with panelists making their predictions for the future. The interesting point made during predictions was that the slowdown would increase efficiency and focus among companies which would be a good thing.

@HeadStart 09 Bangalore - The Entrepreneur Round Table

We just reached Headstart at Bangalore. A delayed flight and fuel strike delayed us reaching the event. But nevertheless we are here and are bringing you the updates via live blogging and also via twitter. We missed the Entrepreneur roundtable panel in the morning and are reproducing the synopsis via the headstart blog.

headstart

Panel in the morning was an entrepreneur roundtable which included the following panelists:

  • Jay Pullur from Pramati
  • Giri Krishna from Sylvan Learning
  • Sujai Karampuri from Sloka Telecom
  • Moderated by Srinivasan from Amagi.

The discussion was started by Pullur who asked what an entrepreneur should do in these challenging days? He outlined the challenges that anentrepreneur faces everyday.

He stated "95% of the profits goes to only 3 companies - IBM, Microsoft and HP. The other 7500 companies are fighting for the rest 5%. He said that plenty of companies have also be en cornered out by the larger operators - Siebel was one"

He also stated "Consumer products is a completely new game. There are, perhaps, million different offerings. The market is much different in consumer arena and it is much easier to make profits. But then, those are not necessarily technology products unless you are a large company. Things like Tell-A-Friend from Pramati has been very well appreciated."

Sujai spoke on his experience at raising funding. He pointed out that VC’s don’t fund product startups. He also stated that Silicon Valley Vc’s are known to fund ideas and first time entrepreneur but thats not the case in India. To illustrate this he showed his own companies product which he stated that ‘this cheapest base stations, which is 6 times cheaper than the closest competitors and yet we have failed to secure funding from Indian VCs’.

He also felt that there was a whole VC worship syndrome in India and also the replicate the US syndrome which is wrong given that India is a different market. He stated that sad reality is that Indian Tech Companies are not getting funding as much as they need to drive innovation.

Giri Krishna spoke of three things that technology entrepreneurs can do -  Drive technology, drive strategy or build organizations. But he felt that Indian companies do not have the opportunity to drive technology or strategy.

Vernacular Content on The Web - Patterns, Capabilities and Barriers to Consumption Revealed by IAMAI

Towards the end of December IAMAI released a Vernacular Content Consumption Report. The report the last released by IAMAI in 2008 studies the consumption patterns of vernacular content, the potential and the barriers to consumption prevalent in the Indian digital (especially web) space. Besides the Internet the report also carries a heavy analysis of the Regional content consumption by Indians in general and also involves a specific comparitive study of Television and Internet with regards to this subject.

The report is essentially divided into 6 chapters -

  1. Patterns of Vernacular Content Consumption
  2. Indian Language Content on the Internet
  3. Examining Parallels Between Television and the Internet
  4. Vernacular Capabilities on the PC
  5. Barriers of Vernacular Adoption
  6. Discussion

The report essentially is a platform to discuss the adoption of Internet and Communication Technologies in India, and focusses primarily on how the regional content issue widens the gap between urban and rural adoption of ICT. The comparision with traditional media is primarily to reflect the change in adoption levels of medium like the Television once regional content began streaming over them. And therefore suggests that perhaps a similar push is needed on the Internet as well to ensure better adoption of the medium across the country. Better adoption of the medium obviously means more users and therefore a larger bouquet for business initiatives on the medium to target.

The report therefore primarily can benefit content publishers on the web and funds sources looking for scale and scope of the web media in India.

Key highlights of the report includes:

  • The consumption charachteristics of the Indian populace towards media in general is localised and regional in nature. English seems the less preferred choice among the unadopted mass.
  • A potent mix of infrastructure, application and content is the key to unlock widespread adoption of ICT, if patterns of radio, television and print is to be followed.
  • There is difference between the usage and the demand for regional content on the web. The reason for the difference being lack of infrastrucutre as wella s existing regional content for those demanding vernacular content.
  • Demand for predictive translation initiatives is required signifies requirement of R&D to popularise regional content adoption.

The report can be downloaded from http://www.iamai.in/reports1.aspx

TED Conference Coming To Mysore In November

Yes you read it right! The famous TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference is finally coming to India this year. The latest TED newsletter says that TED will come to Mysore between November 4-7, 2009. The TED blog had reported in February last year that TED would indeed be coming to India, however the venue was mentioned as Mumbai and the dates were not yet decided. I guess the change in the venue from Mumbai to Mysore might be due to the recent terrorist attacks.

TED

The TED conference will be a milestone since it's the first time a TED is happening in India. The conference deals with a wide variety of topics and has a huge following throughout the world. It's videos are circulated far and wide. On Youtube, the videos have been viewed nearly 50 million times. The way I see it, it's an awesome opportunity for the Indian start-up community as well as any generalist.

Some of the notable past speakers at TED have included personalities such as former U.S. president Bill Clinton, Nobel laureates James D. Watson , Murray Gell-Mann, Al Gore, as well as internet entrepreneur Jimmy Wales, and for their fans, the Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

Do keep following WATBlog for more updates. We'll publish them as we get to know more.

We had earlier blogged about TED here.

UTV New Media Bullish On Mobile Apps & Revenue - Techtree to soon launch WAP site & Mobile App

TN PrabhuWATBlog met up with TN Prabhu CEO of UTV New Media which is the digital arm of UTV Media and handles properties like Techtree (acquired by acquiring IT Nation), UTVi.com and UTVatplay.com the entertainment downloads portal.

During our discussion with Prabhu we came to know the following about UTV Media ’s Future plans:

UTV’s Content Focus & Strategy

UTV New Media will look at creating media properties that help users discover, compare and recommend. This could be across verticals like tech, entertainment and so on. The three main verticals that UTV New Media is currently focussing on is Tech (via Techtree, CXOToday and other ITNation properties), Personal Finance (UTVi.com) & Entertainment (UTVatplay.com).

Sharper focus for properties & Mobile foray

Techtree will soon have a sharper focus and will launch a WAP site and a Mobile application. UTVatplay is also working on a mobile foray which will drive revenues.

Increase in revenue from Mobile channels. Break even in 8 months.

UTVi currently earns 20% of revenue from mobile and 80% via online advertising. Prabhu expect this to change to a 40:60 ratio in a years time. The overall contribution of UTV New Media to the overall UTV business would be around 4-5 %. UTV New Media expects to breakeven in 6-8 months.

View on Online Video

Prabhu said that they are deliberately staying limited in their initiatives with regards to online video. They first want to establish the identity of their properties in a big way and then look at launching multiple video initiatives. Just to point out Techtree has already intiated Video section called Techtree.tv which has tech and gaming reviews.

We have shot a WATShow with Mr.Prabhu which we shall be releasing soon. So stay tuned!

Tie Up Update: MySpace - Virgin / Interactive Avenues -Efficient Frontier

Tie ups galore.. Just yesterday we blogged about a tie up between Bigflix and future group and more tie ups have cropped up recently. Its a sign of cross leveraging competencies and focusing on one’s core competency.

Lets look at two such tie ups today:

MySpace partners Virgin Mobile - WIll Now Be available across Virgin Handsets

Myspace virginMySpace.com the global giant social network which has taken the entertainment route to social networking India has tied up with the youthful Virgin mobile. According to this tie up MySpace services shall be available on Virgin Mobile WAP-enabled phones. MySpace would be accessible by clicking the MySpace link on vBytes and logging in the user ID and password. MySpace would also be gaining new users via this model as new users can begin by creating a fresh id and password.

We have blogged earlier about Mobile Social Networking especially about the mobile phone bundling deals done by RocketTalk and Qeep. Our take on such deals was unless the mobile operator/manufacturer is of sizeable stature the deal makes little sense. Also just because the app is bundled doesn’t mean it would be used. In this particular tie up between MySpace and Virgin its more of a promotion via WAP portal. I feel given Virgin’s miniscule reach in India (given its new in the market) this wouldn’t have a huge impact for MySpace. But the very fact that new users can sign up as well this is a nice investment for the longterm. The other factor is that goes with MySpace is the brand synergy between myspace and virgin.

Interactive Avenues Partners Efficient For ROI Maximization For Clients

interactive avenuesInteractive Avenues the digital marketing firm formed after the exodus from Mediaturf a couple of years back announced an exclusive partnership with Efficient Frontier. Efficient Frontier will provide Interactive Avenues technology to help Clients maximize return on their search marketing. This tie-up is based on a revenue sharing model. Efficient Frontier is headquartered in US and has an office in India in Chennai. Their major market right now is the US and this is a way for them to enter the Indian market.

As per the IAMAI and IMRB Report on the Indian Search Engine Marketing Industry more than 50% growth is expected in 2009 (keep in mind this report did not consider the slowdown :)). The major firms in Search Marketing are Pinstorm and Communicate2 both of whom have strategic partners in Lintas and Aegis Media respectively. As digital marketing progresses in 2009 tie ups and use of technology is likely to rise.
