Digital Takes All in the Afaqs Buzziest Brands of 2009 Report

Airtel, Facebook, Google, Idea & Nokia formed the top 5 of the buzziest brands of 2009 released by Afaqs.com. And as digital media enthusiasts this is certainly pleasing for a lot of us. 2009 is the fourth edition of Buzziest brands and Airtel has successfully maintained its numero uno position of the last 3 years this time as well. And save for a Tata event he sixth position would have gone to another mobile player- Vodafone.

This is what the report said about the winner:

“..Airtel received about 30 per cent more votes than the runner up, Idea. Airtel truly proves that buzz is a byproduct of doing a whole lot of things in an exciting way. Three of the six judges voted for the brand. The percentage of voters who supported Airtel: 46.7 per cent.”

With Google and Facebook coming in at number 3 and 2 respectively, even the web finds its place in buzzy sun. Interesting point to note here is that these two Internet behemoth don’t advertise their business in India at all, while the other digital media - mobile has its players on a campaign warfare on traditional as well as new media. Point to moot - branding is everything and it is a factor of business innovation as much as it is about promotion.

What takes things in favour of digital media is the reach and scope that they can achieve. The digital eco-system is perhaps the only one that is in constant use for users. We are on the mobile all the time, we use our PCs and Laptops throughout the day and therefore they are spoken about most of the time thus building buzz. It therefore makes sense for marketers and brands to be on the medium a lot more to associate with this buzz. For instance, one doesn’t read a newspaper throughout the day, or watch television or travel on the road for hours at a stretch everyday. The connectivity therefore that digital media especially mobile provides therefore is at the root of the buzz and it can easily be translated on to the brands that are present on these media as well.

Tata, Times of India, Taj Hotels and Kingfisher were the other players in the top 10. You can read the complete analysis of the buzziest brands here.
