Google Kills Adsense For Videos

In a recent blogpost from Google, the California based company has announced the move to discontinue adsense for video programme from May.

Adsense for video units were introduced in October 2007 and it allowed publishers to show YouTube content and relevant ads on their pages.

All publishers have been informed to remove adsense for video units or else from May those ad units will direct users to YouTube.com without any earning from those units and this would in no way affect the video ads appearing in adsense for content.

At the same time Google will continue to accept applications from publishers who produce video contents to have AdSense for video units on their content. What will be discontinued is the option for non-video owners to embed videos on their sites with AdSense units from their AdSense account.

This comes as a shock to publishers who where betting that monetization avenues would keep on rising with different additions like adsense for rss and other likely avenues in future.

According to them they decided to axe the programme after internal reviewing process as the programme was not having the desired impact meaning not earning enough money for google.

What does this means for publishers?
Publishers were betting that google would open all youtube videos for adsense unlike just videos from content owner qualified to participate although that didn’t happen but one important avenue of monetisation is killed. The video adsense were reporting very impressive CTR’s.

The publishers might be tempted to turn over to video ad networks like Revver, who rewards not only content creators but content sharing users. This could mean good news for nearly drowning revver.

Expect google to go with many more cost cutting measures and spurning of non-core activities but this move seriously puts a question on Google’s ability to market their advertising products in this case adsense for videos.

At the same time their monetization strategy was also not correct by showing cluttered ads going against its own policy of keeping it simple. They could have just provided few ads after video just what revver do with google ads in their videos which in turn could have presented attractive proposition to advertisers.

Google’s April Fool Pranks!

Rajiv blogged about what C2W.com are doing for April Fool’s Day yesterday, but what have the giants of the internet Google pulled off this year?

CADIE - Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity

“For several years now a small research group has been working on some challenging problems in the areas of neural networking, natural language and autonomous problem-solving. Last fall this group achieved a significant breakthrough: a powerful new technique for solving reinforcement learning problems, resulting in the first functional global-scale neuro-evolutionary learning cluster.”

Youtube gives users a new viewing experience! When users select a video within certain areas such as the “recommended for you” section, this new interface caused the whole layout including the video you were watching to flip upside down!

gBall
Google Australia announces (”New! Get the newest football technology - gBall.”) that they are developing a prototype ball for use in the Australian Football League with GPS. Apparently, the ball will measure the location, force, and torque of a kick, and “vibrate if player agents or talent scouts want to speak to you”. Google claimed that the ball will cost $10 with a cost-per-kick set of payments in addition to the basic fee.

Google Chrome with 3D
Google has announced Google Chrome with 3D, powered by CADIE. If you hit Download, Google Chrome does render the RGB channels with an offset!

Gmail Autopilot
Gmail has announced Autopilot. The link can be found on the top right corner of the Gmail inbox.

Google Earth and Google Maps also have some CADIE pranks in them…

For a comprehensive list of other pranks doing the rounds, check out TechCrunch.

One of my favourites is what Reddit.com have done! :-)
They’ve been Re-dugg!

Govt To Launch 100Mbps Connections At Bus Kiosks In India

In a bid to increase internet penetration in India the government is taking some serious steps in bringing last mile broadband access to the country. This is why it has now launched an initiative which is likely to be rolled out in the next 6 months. This is the bus kiosk 100 Mbps connection which the government plans to launch across top 8 cities in India.

How would this help?

This would provide access to those at bus kiosks and would enable them to not only surf the internet but also download and upload data using a data drive. One can also listen to music at this kiosk.

How does this kiosk look?

The kiosk would have two screens with one for business and the other for entertainment functions. An early graphic screenshot of the kiosk is given below:

How can one use it and what will it cost?

The kiosk can be used by anyone holding the kiosk card. The applications for the kiosk card have already been opened at the Bus kiosk official website and one can apply here.

The Future Estimates in Online Advertising Revenues

I sometimes feel that why should the travesties of justice in the form of recession had to strike our generation. A prolonged discussion of global recession would lead us to macro-economics and fiscal policies going wrong at a macro level; so let’s chuck it and talk about the recession’s role in the future of revenue generation in the online advertising world.

Marketing in all forms have suffered during these times and the online world is no exception. But, as the experts say that the internet space is still into the sunrise stage, there has been growth, but too minimal in results as compared to the last decade. An international survey done by Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers says, “With growth now at 10.6% it is evident that online ad sales have hit a plateau of $23.4 billion. Q4 sales reached $6.1 billion, showing only a small gain of 2.6%“.

India has a major role to play in the global online businesses and there needs to be credit card penetration taking place in the domestic market for the online ad industry to grow. Why? Simple because, most of the transaction online happen through a credit card. More the users of credit cards, more transactions take place resulting in increase of revenues for the online ad industry.

Mr Ajit Balakrishnan, Chairman & CEO, Rediff.com said that the Indian market of online advertising is expected to be at Rs. 600 crores. He gave a keynote address at a seminar organised by the IAA (International Advertising Association), titled 'Digital Download’ wherein he says, “With 40 million online users today, the country is already amongst the top five Internet users but that is still a small number compared to the size of the country. While recession had slightly slowed down the trajectory growth in the online space, the number of users was expected to grow to 300 million in the next 3-5 years“.

Mr. Balakrishnan’s main concern was the unreasonable prices in the broadband services that is hampering the online revenue growth to some extent. Considering that there have been heavy investments, it is necessary to implement and develop broadband services from the grassroots level for this problem to get solved. Another interesting thing that Mr Hemant Sachdev, Joint Managing Director, Microsoft Corporation India brought out was the explosion of Social Media and its ability to engage the user. This engagement has a direct co-relation with the increase in revenues. Reasons are simple. I am sure you can interpret.

I was just googling out more on this topic about the future of Online Revenues when I struck upon this. Techcrunch has this amazing article in the form of a debate on ‘The future of Online Advertising’ between the experts Danny Sullivan and Eric Clemons. You got to read it fully to have a bird’s eye view of all the intricacies in the online advertising world.

The statistics that have been brought out by so many people is in verity an eye-opener and shows us a somewhat clear picture about where the online advertising industry is heading. Smart Internet Marketers, it is time for you guys to think and implement new strategies and generate as much revenue as you can in the limited number of opportunities that you would be getting.

The question is - Should you all believe in the statistics and their interpretation?

Haven’t you heard - Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.

I am not being a cynic, Just being Me. :)
