‘We are generating 10 crores worth transactions each month’ - Aloke Bajpai - iXiGo.com

We had recently covered iXiGo.com’s strategy of going mobile and essentially eliminating the OTA with their new mobile click to call feature. We caught up with Aloke Bajpai of iXiGo.com to know more about their business model with the mobile version and on current traction at iXiGo.

Here is the interview:

1) Why go mobile whats the business opportunity?

iXiGO Mobile taps into those users who call up travel agencies because they are away from their computer. We are essentially telling them - “Look, here is a way to search all airlines and hotels, and yet save in the booking fees these travel agencies charge you”

2) How many users do you see using you mobile version?

We launched yesterday, and have already seen over a  thousand searches. iXiGO Mobile will be featured on some TV shows and newspaper articles over the next week, and with more popularity we expect that early next year we will have tens of thousands of searches over mobiles daily.

3) How many travel searches are done per month on iXiGo?

iXiGO processes nearly half a million travel searches every month. We are generating a monthly total transaction value (TTV) of nearly 10 Crores through iXiGO on airlines, hotel booking sites, bus booking sites, and it’s increasing at a healthy double-digit growth rate month on month despite the market environment.

4) Are you looking at more such tie ups like the one with NDTV? What is the revenue share like in such tie ups?

We already have many such affiliate relationships, and some more are going live in a couple of weeks. We monetize together with our affiliates from ads, bookings, and sponsored listings.

Introducing Fennec - Firefox’s Mobile Browser

So with a large part of the world quickly going mobile the browser wars are moving from the desktop to the mobile. Firefox which is the No.2 browser in the world in terms of market share has hardly had a browser in the mobile arena. A Mozilla based browser minimo was launched in 2004 and later updated in 2007 but the project was left midway by the developers.

So this new attempt by Firefox to launch a mobile can be termed as its first serious one. Fennec as the mobile browser is called stands for a small desert fox (what else did you expect from Firefox!). Currently the browser is in the alpha stage and can only be tested on a Nokia N810 tablet or on the PC.

Check the video below of the Fennec browser walkthrough:

Firefox Popularity

Firefox is extremely popular among the techie audience due to its browser addons feature which is missing from any other browser. We had covered one such extension in ubiquity. Firefox has also been active in involving the developer community in building the browser of the future.

Browser Market

But the browser market got shaken up when Google decided to launch Chrome and has quickly overtakednthe number 3 player Opera in the desktop browser market share.

But mobile is a different ball game and has been largely dominated by Nokia symbian browser, blackberry’s browsers, operamini, Windows pocket internet explorer and of course iPhone’s safari browser which has gained market share very quickly.

Here are some stats on the total browser market the world over:

Why does it matter to India?

On the whole this move is important from an India point of view as my statistics tell me that 40% of WATBlog’s users are from firefox browsers which means that these people would surely be interested in a mobile browser from the firefox stable. Also the fact that mobile subcribers would touch 500 million by 2010 in India it would surely create a sizeable (if not really large) gprs enable phone + subscribers market in india by then.

Radio City’s Tryst With The Web

Radio City has been very very active over the past 3 months with their web and mobile strategy. They launched a social network around music in august by the name of planetradiocity.com. Then they announced a tie up with mobile services provider mauj telecom in which mauj would power all mobile activities of radio city. It seems that Radio city is very upbeat on using the online medium not only for brand building but also for evangelising the radio medium itself and that is why it has launched radiorocks.in.

Why the digital Industry needs a Radiorocks of its own?

The Web and mobile industry need a radiorocks like initiative of its own. Yes there is IAMAI but we need more platforms like these which are directed directly towards the media planners and advertisers and which highlight the strengths and effectiveness of the medium. One of the key requirements of this space is advertiser access and awareness and a concious effort needs to be made by industry player to push in that direction. Kudo’s to Radiocity for this move. It seems people in radio are better tuned in to what is required to get their industry going.
