Sabeer Bhatia’s Latest Ventures - YouSalary.com & LayoffGossip.com

Sabeer Bhatia is been pretty active in the last couple of months or so investing in new dotcom idea’s. The man behind Hotmail who is yet to see success with any of his other investments like Arzoo, Apnacircle, Instacoll or sabsebolo.com

Sabeer has not seen even 1/4th of the kind of success he saw with Hotmail but then its not everyday that you have a 400 million dollar payday. His latest two investments are also in the dotcom space and both are started by the same entrepreneur Abir Bhattacharyya who is a serial internet entrepreneur based out of the US.

These two dotcoms are Yousalary.com and LayoffGossip.com. Both are pretty much targetted at the global markets with focus on the US. As the names suggests Yousalary is a salary comparison tool while Layoffgossip is just about that Gossips about the now contant layoffs. Layoffgossip is a user generated content driven site which and is little over 2-3 weeks old.

Both these site seem to be in what most would call as the early beta stage. These two seem like experimental projects and if you ask me these seems no longterm business case for both of them in terms of a scalable monetization model besides for ads. UGC platforms like digg have also suffered at the hands of poor monetization and it wouldn’t be any different for any social media platform even facebook is still figuring out a scalable monetization model.

All in all sabeer’s new ventures are nothing even close to hotmail or i doubt they will ever see that kind of success. But what remains to be seen is as investor can Sabeer bhatia turn around atleast one or two of his current investments into decent success or else he wont have much to write home about besides for hotmail.com.

NetworkPlay Signs On Zeenews.com - Launches News Vertical - Is Business Vertical Next With UTVi.com?

NetworkPlay the vertical centric ad network which just burst onto the scene recently and which was in the news a few weeks back for signing on Gawker media as one of the publishers has launched a new vertical today. Networkplay has ventured into the news vertical by signing on zeenews.com as the first publisher in this segment.

networkplay-zeenews

With the recent terror strikes in mumbai the news readership online definitely went up quite a few notches and suddenly the news segment especially online is a hot one. So this deal couldn’t have come at a better time for networkplay. Zeenews claims to have over 60 Million PageViews and over a 1 Million unique visitors a month! Given these numbers its quite a deal in the ad network space.

Our sources also informed us that come Jan and NetworkPlay would be launching the business vertical and signing on UTVi.com. This is still unconfirmed though.

Given their aggressiveness and unique vertical focussed model it was important to know more about the NetworkPlay guys and hence we interviewed them during our WATBlog Panel in delhi.

Check out our WATShow below with networkplay team:

The new year is round the corner and like last year new year parties information would be one of the most searched the world over. Burrp.com the lifestyle and entertainment infomation services portal has made the new year centric information as a USP around the end of the year. Even last year they had a listings of the new year do’s at their website. This year too they have an online guide but this year they have taken the concept a step further and gone offline with a tie up with City Gudie of Infomedia (Now part of Network18). RCom Launches ‘Samachar’ - A Text News Service In 9 Languages

Reliance Communications has launched "Samachar" an text based news service on Reliance Mobile Phones. This service provides text news in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. For this service Reliance has tied up with Webdunia.com a regional language content provider for web and mobiles.

Mr. Krishna Durbha, Head – Value Added Services, Reliance Communications said, "We have been providing value added services in various Indian languages for over five years. The launch of Samachar, that's news in nine languages, will help us grow VAS usage and penetration."

One should not mistake this service as an sms service as this isnt’t that. This news service is very much like Mytoday’s Nayanaya.mobi except for the fact that this would be available to RCom subscribers via Rworld and for nayanaya.mobi one needs to log on via gprs.

The cost for recieving these news messages isn’t available but given that its Reliance I certainly dont expect this service to be free. On the whole sms and text based news services on mobiles are gaining ground as mobile penetration is gowing each month and with terror strikes, cricket matches, political fiasco’s and business slowdown there is just too much happening in India for an average Indian not to hook into news. The regional language aspect will help in wider distribution and given that Reliance has millions of subscribers Im sure there will be many takers for this service.
