Love, Proposal, Break-up And Divorce 2.0

Remember the crush notification feature on orkut and people trying out hacks to know if anyone has crush on them?

orkut crush notification

Well, as time changes, people find out new ways to express love and also add a pinch of Web 2.0 to the ritual of marriage proposal. Recently, a Googler, Michael Weiss-Malik, popped the question to his love, Leslie, on Google Maps. Now, she might be thinking of a geeky reply, huh!

Previously, we have been a witness of Twitter marriage proposal where Max Kiesler proposed to Emily Chang over Twitter

and she replied “yes” again via Twitter.

Now, coming to dumping and break-ups, it was pretty interesting when a video blogger Sandra Soroka who ditched her beau via a Facebook status update and posted the screen shot to Digg (social media optimization) which got 1600+ votes.

As a reply to this public humiliation someone took revenge in a very geeky way - hacking her Flickr account, deleting all pictures replacing them with “Sandra Kitteh” pic. That’s called Dump 2.0!

Now, moving to Divorce 2.0, Former playwright and actress Tricia Walsh-Smith made embarrassing claims about her husband, Philip Smith on an Youtube video as a reply when seeking a divorce he tried to boot her from the couple’s New York apartment.

In short, life is taking the shape of Life 2.0 and for those who believe in reincarnation, let’s see what web 3.0 brings to them!

In.com Targets Investors Via Moneycontrol.com

Just came across this ad while accessing an article from Moneycontrol.com. Click image below to view the ad:

in.com promotion on moneycontrol

We had recently blogged about the revamp of Moneycontrol and the in.com widget placed prominently on the homepage of the new revamped moneycontrol. Now it seems the Web18 guys are taking this a step further and using the IN in the in.com to their advantage as in=investor.

Check the ad above and you will see how in.com is being promoted as the exclusive email service for investors. To make it look more investor friendly there is a bait in the form of newsletter from Udayan Mukherjee of CNBC and also a portfolio manager within the account for investors.

It seems In.com is in a hurry to gain userbase and its doing all the tricks it can play to gain market share in the email space. In.com had earlier tied up with singh is kinng to promote the movie via a microsite on in.com. We had reviewed in.com at the launch and their opening up out of beta and stated that the streaming music and its speed was their USP and such range of songs and quality was not available anywhere. But with this promotion tactics to investors its seems in.com wants to be everything to everyone. Portfolio manager to investors and music jukebox to music enthusiast. Not sure if one site can keep everyone happy but as they say people still make ‘dot com portals’ in this country!

Google Ramping Up Jaiku To Take On Twitter And Its Limitations

Google has finally started pumping in the google muscle behind Jaiku which it acquired last year to take on the micro blogging leader and today’s buzz platform twitter head on. According to this post by Jaiku invites Jaiku has now been shifted from their earlier finnish servers to the Google App Engine. For those who are wondering why this is important its because this means Jaiku is now on Google infrastructure which means fewer downtime and robust engine. Now now how many of us who are on twitter have had issues with the little bird informing us about the downtime at twitter! So much so that now there are services that lets you backup your twitter data incase twitter goes down and loses it! Inorder to keep spammers at bay and their downtime limited twitter also added restrictions recently on how many people one can follow.

jaiku

Jaiku seems pretty serious and if you try accessing Jaiku you would find a we are shifting nest (servers) page which states that they would be offline till they shift completely. Good things could be seen in the coming days from Jaiku as Google is known to add its value and muscle power to the startups its acquires and is also known to quickly integrate them with its services.

Here is what one can expect from Jaiku:

1) Lesser downtimes

2) Possible Integration with google’s services

3) Google id integration

4) Better mobile app and ofcourse a iPhone app.

On the whole it does seem like Jaiku is pretty well placed to challenge twitter tweets in the online space with google’s solid backing both in infrastructure and the cross property traction that google could bring into the picture.

What do you think? Is this enough reason to jaiku rather than twitter?

Digg Starts A Dialogg In Association With CNN’s iReport.. How About An Indian Dialogg?

Digg.com the popular bookmarking site has taken upon itself to take community participation to a whole new level when it comes to initiating a dialogue with eminent personalities. Digg which is not new to power of communities is using the same to pose questions to eminent personalities including technology luminaries, environmentalists, entrepreneurs, musicians and filmmakers and is calling this new initiative Digg Dialogg.

digg dialogg

Digg has announced this initiative on its blog and also the fact that this is a joint effort with CNN’s unedited and uncensored news site iReport.com.

With the election campaigning in its full swing in the US its no surprise that the first guest to be questioned on Digg Dialogg is from the political field. The first guest will be Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House.

Digg Dialogg would work in this way.. Users would pose questions and other users would vote these questions up or bury them very much like they digg or bury stories. And by the time the interview time nears the top questions would be posed to the guests.

A similar exercise of questioning was carried out by Yahoo Answers as a part of its Ask the Planet campaign. But in that case eminent personalities posed questions where as the users of Yahoo answers answered. This campaign was backed by a good offline promotion in the form of billboard which saw tremendous response to these questions. On the whole this marketing campaign by Yahoo was a runaway success.

The Digg Dialogg model surely looks an interesting one where in users are participating to pose questions. I really feel it could work in India if executed well. The players that I see in a good position to execute this kind of exercise would be the likes of ibibo, rediff and yahoo which have QnA Platforms. Even news sites like NDTV, CNN IBN could use this model to pose questions to celebrities.

Anyone else thinks this model could work well? If yes which Indian site comes to mind?

Linkedin Looking For Local TieUps In India?

Linkedin spokesperson Krista Canfield has stated to afaqs that linkedin would be looking at ‘Strategic local players as partners’ now there is no further diclosure from her whether these will be online or offline partners? Or how would these partners benefit Linkedin in spreading its presence in India?

linkedin

One may recall that naukri had launched a linkedin clone in Brijj which I haven’t heard of doing much since its launch except for the claim that it has 8 lakh registered users. Linkedin on the other hand has claimed itself to be the most popular network in India with more that a million Indian users. Its is also ranked among the top 150 sites in India and recently closed a funding that valued it at over 1 billion dollars!

Linkedin had also suggested that it could look to acquire smaller startups that fit its strategy but that was in the international context then. But could it look for acquisitions in India? Seems less likely as there are few startups that can potentially be worth at this early stage in India. But tieups can surely be an option and one such option could be with Web18 which owns B2B sites like Moneycontrol and Tech2 and Biztech2 where the audience would definitely match Linkedin’s target audience. Web18 which has ventured into many web properties still doesn’t have anything in the networking space and it wont harm its fortunes to tie up with an international leader like linkedin.

What do you guys think? Any Web 18 guys reading this?

BigAdda.com Now On Mobile.. Invite Your Phonebook & Make Your Mobile Number Your Profile ID!

BigAdda the social network backed by Reliance ADAG which has already spent crores of rupees in advertising has now launched a mobile version of their site christened ‘MobileAdda’. As per the release the mobile version of the site would have the complete functionality of the online version.

bigadda

big adda mobile

One can access MobileAdda via Sms or WAP or even Through a Downloadable Mobile App

For SMS one needs to sms: BIGADDA to 55454

For GPRS/WAP users one can log on to wap.bigadda.com

To Download the Mobile client sms ADDA to 55454 or go to wap.bigadda.com/download

What’s so special in the mobile version?

'MobileAdda' includes features like searching for friends, inviting them from your phonebook, communicating with friends through text, voice and photo scribbles. It also enables users to use the phonebook to send invitations. The feature which is specific to the mobile version is the phone book backup utility stores your phone book on our servers and if in case a user changes a device, the same can be retrieved.

According to Nikhil Soman, Chief Technology Officer, BigAdda, "Social Networking is not restricted to the confines of the pc browser. In India, mobile phones are the preferred and mostly the sole means of connecting with friends and family. This year we are all set to refine and redefine the boundaries of Social Networking in India. . This will be a major departure for users of social networks, from being an occasional visitor to now proactively driving their networks,"

What is different from other Players?

Indyarocks, IBIBO etc offer a basic SMS service as well as WAP sites ( see our last year’s review of social networks on mobile) but BigAdda’s MobileAdda looks to cover all forms of access through mobile i.e. [SMS, WAP & Java Client].

Also the core differentiating factor is the use of mobile number as the profile id and the ability to invite friends on my phonebook list. I feel the success of the downloadable mobile client will determine the sucess of MobileAdda from BigAdda this is because I feel sms is too cumbersome and WAP access and typing the url each time wouldn’t catch on but if the downloads can be pushed there is surely hope given then one doesn’t need to remember ones username and can use one’s phone number.
