Yahoo to Shut Down Briefcase Service - Online storage providers reeling under severe stress.

ma_bfc_1
Yahoo, as a part of trimming down excess cost, has decided to shut down its 10-year-old online storage program — the Yahoo Briefcase-which never seemed to got popular among the netizens.

Why does it make sense for Yahoo?

  • The company has cited low usage and popularity of the service when compared to its other services like Flickr and Mail as reasons for pulling the plug.
  • The service was unable to garner popularity like flickr and other yahoo sevices.
  • This comes days after new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz took charge and is on a mission to save the Internet giant with a series of tough measures that included even more lay-offs, pay cuts and salary freezes.

Users have been provided a march 30 deadline to retrieve their files from yahoo servers after failing to which the files would be deleted.

Few other online storage provide who had to close their shop:

Hp shuts down their online storage service just 2 weeks after launch.

Aol shuts down its infamous xdrive-online storage portal.

What makes online storage business –A loss making proposition?

  • Decreasing online advertising revenues on storage site is the main bone of contention for these companies to fail. The declining revenues is due to the  non-aggressive bidding for advertising space on online storage sites which again is caused by  a hue of illegal activities taking place on the network.
  • Despite storage cost on continues decline the competition from the likes of new-age sites like ziddu, megaupload, 4shared is increasing and the cost of maintaining several backups of server files is the reason for these companies to reel under such severe pain.
  • Most of the online storage sites have turned  to be a warez sites due to the misuse by the members.
  • The suit of claims due to rapid increase in warez activities is also increasing legal cost.
  • Another important thing is that people are accessing online storage sites through variety of softwares thus the decline in page views is further putting pressure on advertising dollars.

Now consumers have to choose a reliable host for online storage as many companies are shutting down and it would become more painful to manage the files once the company shuts and provides a deadline.

Talentequity.in - Does this Talent have any Equity?

3253047148

Talentequity.in is a site which aggregates and presents employee opinions about salaries and workplaces. Its a site similar to jobvent or bossbitching though a tad less on features.

Acording to TalentEquity Solutions-the parent of the site:

"It is an effort to provide competitive/best/ value add resources to the professional community."

Main features :

  • The beta version of the site already claims to have 18000 reviews on companies and salaries.
  • It also has a watch feature where an individual can keep a watch on a company so whenever a new review or any update takes place in the database about those employers that person would be informed.
  • The most interesting feature of this site is the salary description which it provides for many designations of the employer in question at the same time the simple layout is too a plus point for the site.
  • It allows employees to review their current as well as their past employers.

Some questions answered by their FAQ:

Can I respond to the reviews or delete my own review?
Currently this feature is not supported though if you want it strongly to commend such action you can write it to them.

How often can I post my reviews?
You can post reviews for your current employer once every six months and you can only post one review for each of your previous employers.

Criticism:

  • This site is meant only for current employees or previous employees as it ask the registering user for a  review before registration.
  • Despite  being well designed and a login system in place the overall features in the site is no where to crave about as there is not a single feature into the site's user dashboard and if you want to use any mentioned features then  all they say is contact the company to use the feature.
  • Once you register you have no option as of now to modify your review or even see watched items and neither you can comment on any review…though i did found out a link in their faq section to post a new review but that link is no where to be seen on the dashboard.
  • When a user registers for the site he is instantly asked to write a review and then go forward with account creation which is sort of negative.

Little hack: If you want to try the site without registering then just click on salaries tab on the top and use it without registration.

Some questions:

Despite so many programming bugs and so less features available in the beta release this site may have potential to become an instant hit the reason for it being now-a-days people prefer working environment more than just salary and it will have an early mover advantage in the job review field in India though sites like Mouthshut already have such features.

The main business model where they can stand out is the collaboration with the companies(employers) so that those companies motivates their employees to go forward and register their reviews about the companies workplace and environment which in turn would solve many H.R problems and could be a big boon for companies like Talentequity.

The business model in order to achieve stability calls for viral features to be embedded into the site because reviewing and researching is a very seldom affair.

As their site says anonymity is their biggest quotient and that itself should be their biggest worry because spamming and tarnishing reputation of firms could ignite users wrath and companies action against them.

Final Verdict:

The individuals can certainly go and try this site as it could offer them certain insights about their employers and it could become more useful once the above said features are introduced in full stream.

Google Internet Bus to Familiarize Tamil Nadu locals with the Internet

Here something new from the Google guys: Yesterday they unveiled the Google Internet Bus which will embark on a 45 day long road trip covering 15 destination of Tamil Nadu.

The Google Internet Bus homepage says :

“The Internet Bus Project is an attempt educate people about what the Internet is, and how it may be beneficial to their lives, by taking the Internet experience to them through a customised Internet-enabled bus, which will travel to several towns and cities across India."

google-bus-indiaThe Internet Bus is part of a mobile campaign which will cover the tier-II and tier-III cities of TN. The focus will mainly be on information, communication, entertainment and education and hence the facilities on the bus will be used to familiarize the people with search, email, social networking etc with the ultimate aim of showing them how the internet makes life simpler. At the stops, the local people will be provided with content in English as well as Tamil. Videos depicting how the world uses the world wide web in a variety of ways will be showed to these people to give them a better idea of the services that the net has to offer to them.

This campaign is an excellent initiative from Google from not only a social point of view but also from a marketing point of view. It comes at a time when the demand for internet facilities from rural areas is increasing at a fast pace. Also, as far as rural markets are concerned, it's the mobile industry that will eventually bring the internet to the masses rather than the PCs.

The bus gets its internet connectivity using satellite.

So why Tamil Nadu?

According to Dr Ram Prasad, Head of R&D at Google, India, Tamil Nadu was chosen since a high percentage of online content is Tamil and also because a lot of Tamilian expats are active on the net. This is their pilot run and based on the feedback they receive they will see how to go about expanding this to other states. They also plan on sharing some of the feedback with the state government.

The first stop after Chennai is going to be Vellore, which it'll reach on the 5th of February.

Astro Group Acquires 50% In In Indian Online Firm Morgae Digital - Mobile Social Networking Foray Expected

A Malaysia based media conglomerate Astro Group has acquired a 50% stake in little known Indian online firm Mogae Digital for $5 million. That puts the valuation of Morgae digital at 10 million and I have never ever heard of the agency yet.

Though the founders behind the agency are well known entrepreneurs from the advertising space. Mogae Digital is promoted by Sandeep Goyal and Tanya Goyal, who are the Indian Joint Venture partners Dentsu Media the Japanese Media company. So that kind of explains why the 10 million valuation given the fact that morgae digital which is suppose to be a digital agency has still no presence on the web.

The word is doing the rounds that Morgae would be launching a couple of properties one in the mobile social networking space and another in local search engine space this year.

The Astro Group is the one of the largest integrated media conglomerate in Malaysia which operates a pay TV channel on the DTH Platform and 12 Radio stations. This investment follows the trend of International media and advertising firms investing in India’s Digital growth. Agencies like Publicis, WPP, Aegis media and others have acquired or invested in creating digital arms. There have also been Media companies like MIH/Naspers that have invested heavily in the Indian online space via their portal ibibo.com.

Our take is that agencies/media co’s having access to advertisers will do well in the long run whether or not they are able to create great products. This is because advertiser access and conversion and Ad dollar flow into digital media is critical for the growth and agencies are best positioned to make this happen.
