HuffingtonPost Valued At 100M$ - Raises 25M$ - Does India Have A HuffingtonPost?

Its seems that online journalism be it blogs or citizen journalism are in vogue in the US. This year itself Contentnext Media which runs a bunch of blogs got acquired for 30 million $ while GigaOm.com and its network of blogs raised funding of 4.5 million dollars. Now in one of the biggest funding news stories HuffingtonPost.com has raised 25 million $ from Oak Ventures at an estimated valuation of 100 million $.

huffington-post-funding

HuffingtonPost is an immensely popular online news site in the US and had clocked 300 million page views in the election month. Launched in May of 2005 by Arianna Huffington it had got a lot of brickbats and flak then.

This slowdown is probably the best time to raise money (that’s if you can manage to). As no one knows how deep and long would this slowdown be in the US. This surely puts Huffington in a great position to acquire talent and other sites which may gel well to its own.

Searching for India’s HuffingtonPost?

Well in India I have come few sites that ape the huffington model. Yes there is instablogs which raised funding as well but that is also targetted towards an international audience. There are few independant news portals which are targetting just India. I came across an interesting one in TheViewspaper at one of the Proto.in Startup Showcase events and was impressed by what they had going for them. But given that India is still a nascent online market it will be sometime before we see India’s Huffingpost story.

Pownce Acquired By SixApart - To Be Shutdown by 15th Dec

Pownce a microblogging service which was launched in 2007 and created quite a buzz infact we had blogged about it as well has now been acquired by SixApart the company behind blogging platforms like movabletype and typepad.

pownce

Pownce was founded by Kevin Rose the founder of Digg.com a immensely popular social bookmarking site and saw some real good initial traction. I was one of the first few guys to join pownce in its closed beta stage. I think what went against pownce was the fact that its features propagated a lot of spamming and it kinda put one off.

Also the other thing was the twitter had already built a loyal following and it seems like the followers didn’t graduate to using pownce as a service.

As this article puts it pownce is expected to be shut down by 15th December and its current avatar would cease to exist. What it looks like is that SixApart seems to have acquired the great team behind pownce rather than the service itself. It will be interesting to see if SixApart launches a free standalone microblogging product or maybe launches a paid micro blogging product for corporates just like movabletype and typepad have a free and paid version.
