Bookmyshow.com Partners Airtel To Expand Reach To 80 Million GSM Subscribers

Bookmyshow.com Web18’s entertainment ticketing service provider has partnered with Bharti Airtel to offer all Airtel subscribers across India direct access to bookmyshow.com on their mobile phones. This will be done via three modes i.e. via a mobile applications, airtel’s wapsite and tele-booking as well.

This means that airtel customers can book tickets on the Airtel WAP site live.airtelworld.com on all GPRS enabled handsets and alternatively also call 5432191 that would be directed to the Bookmyshow call center for tele-booking and home delivery, for any cinema/Play theatre/concert venue covering any show time.

This gives bookmyshow the reach to 80 Million + airtel subscribers at one go and that is huge reach. Bookmyshow has been doing very well since its inception and has fast become one of India’s largest entertainment ticketing site.

What we recommend to Bookmyshow?

Bookmyshow should have a look at eventbrite’s model. Eventbrite is an event registration service which is international and pretty successful. Bookmyshow can take events to the longtail in India by allowing users to create and market their own events. This would inturn build user engagement with the site far more than what it is currently where in the site only functions as a ticketing portal. What do you guys think? Should bookmyshow look at the eventbrite model?

Guruji Adds Finance Vertical - A Move Towards Portal Mode

Guruji is fast transforming from the one time local search player to a full fledged Indian portal avatar. If there was any doubt in anyone’s mind on this imminent shift then the launch of their finance vertical called guruji finance should clear it once and for all.

Guruji finance is an out and out rediff money clone minus the portfolio management tools. In its current avatar you may call it a stock exchange quote search engine but the guruji blog terms it correctly as the finance portal.

Guruji itself has transformed from being just a pureplay local search engine to adding image, music and movie listings search. The traction at guruji.com also seems to have risen leaps and bounds and guruji is fast closing in on the top 100 sites in India. Guruji also seems to be looking to monetizing this traffic via ads and is soliciting ppc and cpm advertisers for its site.

I can foresee guruji making strides in two more directions one is the addition of more verticals beyond finance i.e. Im sure blog/video search may be one of them. The other direction is to launch a robust online advertising system for their site which will be required to monetize their inventory in the most effective manner.

WAT a News Round Up

Browsing some of the popular news sources today, we found a lot of space occupied by dot commers in the press spread, here are some of the key developments in the Indian online industry that caught our attention today.

Sprice.com Ties Up with the Indian Express Group

Sprice is one of the leading travel search engines especially in the US has partnered with Expressindia.com for content syndication empowering travel searches within the portal. It will essentially power the hotel section of the website providing reviews, hotel prices, etc. For Sprice it essentially means a bigger foothold and access into perhaps one of the most active niches in the Indian Internet space. Tying up with one of the foremost publication brands in India is strategically an excellent move especially in the crowded travel segment. Hopefully, this might bring in some ray of light into the troubled segment.

Komli Launches a Premium Auto Channel

Ad Network Komli which has recently been in the news for various tie ups has upped its ante in terms of the engaging some serious publisher power into its network. It has launched a premium Auto channel which comprises of 15 of the most popular automotive related websites. I think we can expect a stream of such news from Ad networks in the near future and can certainly be a trend in the online advertising industry in India. The packaging in this case is certainly different from though the idea remains the same as that of vertical ad networks. So it is an ad measurement tool, the pioneer in rich media advertising and now first of perhaps more targeted publisher bundle, Komli certainly is ringing the Christmas bells early for the advertisers this time.

Jivox Releases a Bandwidth Cutting Technology

Vijayachandran Mariappan, Head – Video Technology at Jivox said, “We effectively reduce the bandwidth requirement of our Ad delivery network by using advanced compression algorithms for ads created using the Jivox portal or existing TV commercials uploaded to our portal."

Lack of bandwidth hampering the creatives and prorogation of rich media based advertising is what we had heard in some of the summits and conferences that WAT has been able to take part in recent times. If Jivox which is primarily into video enabled advertising solutions is able to deliver on its promise, it can greatly bridge the Digital Divide at least a part of it.

And in a deeper endeavor, Google announced the launch of the Gram Panchayat Puraskar to reward the best innovations in local governance by Gram Panchayats in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The Gram Panchayat will have to demonstrate the following:

  1. Inclusion of all social and income groups in village decision-making or planning.
  2. Sharing information with villagers such as Gram Sabha dates, proceedings and action items; record maintenance; Gram Panchayat plan
  3. Community tracking and monitoring of the budgets and quality of the programs
  4. Working with other programs to reach development objectives

This is a first such effort in India by the search major’s philanthropic arm Google.org and can perhaps be a good bandwagon to promote the idea of Internet a change agent and get more people aware about the internet medium.
